Abstract
There is a continuous gene flow between wild and cultivated species, from the old varieties to the new ones.
Despite their inherent magnitude, these genetic resources are the endless physical medium for improving plant breeding.
However, the economic pressure under which farmers find themselves has caused them to contribute to endangering these genetic resources by almost always growing modern plant varieties.
In France, the BRG coordinate the conservation of these resources through a specialized network that includes the CYNARA. GEVES and INRA are active partners of these actions.
The aims of the CYNARA group are to collect, characterize, preserve, manage and farm all varieties of artichoke and cardoon.
The purpose of this text are twofold: to display the structure of a French genetic resources conservation network; and to present the results of the 5 year operation of the CYNARA group.
