VIRAL DISEASES IN ARTICHOKE CROPS IN SPAIN

Degeneration and yield decrease are common problems in the artichoke (Cynara scolymus L.) that have been observed in Spanish production fields over the last few years.
This work deals with studying the presence of viral infections in the most important artichoke production areas and their possible implication on these problems.
The techniques used for virus identification were based on host-plant reactions, serology and electron microscopy.
As a result of a complete survey, different viral agents have been detected.
Artichoke Latent Potyvirus (ALV) is prevalent in all artichoke production areas in Spain being present in all plants studied coming from traditional crops.
Other virus detected are: Tomato Spotted Wilt Tospovirus (TSWV), Cucumber Mosaic Cucumovirus (CMV) and Artichoke French Latent Fabavirus (AFLV). Besides these, different types of viral particles have been observed by electron microscopy.
The presence of these virus related to the problems previously described in this crop is discussed.
