Abstract
In Huelva (SW Spain), strawberries are grown in intensively managed annual systems on raised beds.
This causes a progressive deterioration of the soil and the need for the use of broad-spectrum fumigants.
In this report we examined the influence of various soil fumigation treatments combined with addition of strawberry root residues on strawberry growth.
Observation boxes (20 cm x 30 cm x 4 cm) were built using glass windows and were filled with sandy soil.
The soil was disinfested using methyl bromide (MB), Dazomet (DAZ) and Telone (TEL), solarization (SOL) and steam sterilization (SS). Non-treated soil was used as control.
In order to simulate the accumulation of strawberry plant residues in soil, a 3-cm layer of sterilized roots (0, 3 and 20%) was placed at 20 cm from the soil surface.
Plants were maintained in a growth chamber (25°C day, 18°C night, 16-h photoperiod). Each treatment had three replicates and the experiment was repeated twice.
Plant height (PH), plant weight (PW), and root length (RL) were measured and the results subjected to ANOVA. The effects of treatment (T) and the presence of strawberry roots residues (RR) significantly affected RH while the effect of T x RR interaction had no significant effect.
The highest plants were found in non-treated soil and in soil treated with MB that had no root residues.
The effects of T, RR and [T x RR] interaction on PW were all significant.
The highest values corresponded to plants grown on solarized soils and soil treated with MB, without plant residues or containing 20%. The effects of T, and [T x RR] interaction were significant on RL. The highest values corresponded to plants grown on solarized soils and soil treated with MB or Telone.
In fumigated soils RL decreased when RR increased.
