Abstract
A systems approach to fruit growth and quality development is introduced, with special emphasis on how to incorporate variability in existing model structures.
A fundamental approach from stochastic systems theory was used to predict the stochastic evolution of fresh weight, firmness and soluble solids content of ‛Conference pears in two different orchards.
The governing equations for the stochastic evolution of the fruit quality attributes were obtained from the generalised Fokker-Planck equation and were solved numerically.
It was shown that the proposed generic methodology describes the dynamics of fruit growth and quality evolution in terms of the probability that particular values of fruit quality attributes during growth are likely to happen.
