Abstract
In Slovakia, chamomile is a most favored medicinal plant.
Indeed, a common, folk saying of the country indicates that an individual should always bow when facing a chamomile plant as a sign of respect.
The plant has been used for over one hundred years in folk medicine of the country.
About till 1955 whole production of the Slovakian chamomile came from the collection in the wild nature.
The wild chamomile raw material was usually collected by Gypsies in the East Slovakian Low-Land and sold to next pharmaceutical processing.
The qualitative and qualitative characteristics of essential oil and its composition for these wild chamomile populations in the East-Slovakian Lowland show that there is a bisabololoxide chemo type with a lower content of essential oil.
The cultivation and production of a high quality chamomile drug on a large scale poses a series of complex questions.
Research at our facility has focused on two immediate problems: cultivation of chamomile varieties with improved genetic material and mechanization of harvesting and post-harvesting processing of chamomile.
The studies in this report were presented to enhance large-scale production of chamomile in Streda nad Bodrogom (East Slovakia) in regard to the qualitative and quantitative characteristics of essential oil, agrotechnics, methods of harvest, post-harvest and yields during 4 production seasons.
