Abstract
Ethylene as a plant hormone plays a major role in senescence and loss of fruit quality and shelf life of apples and makes the fruit unacceptable for consumption.
Modified atmosphere packaging can control respiration rate of a product through decrease in O2 and increase in CO2 concentrations.
In order to maintain quality and increase storage life of ‘Shafi Abadi’ apple an experiment was conducted in split factorial design with four replications.
Treatments were three different storage temperatures (1, 4 and 25°C); two atmosphere combinations (2% CO2 – 3% O2 and 4% CO2 – 1% O2) and two types of polymeric films (polyethylene and polypropylene). Tissue firmness, TSS, EC, pH, TA, TSS/TA, relative humidity and rate of ethylene production were measured and estimated every 14 days.
Ethylene production rate at 1°C was lower while TSS, TA, TSS/TA and tissue firmness values of fruit were maintained in the 1°C and 1% O2 – 4% CO2 atmosphere and packed in polypropylene film compared to other treatments. pH and TSS/TA of fruits showed an increased trend and TSS, TA decreased as well throughout fruit storage.
The changes of quality factors occurred at a slower rate in MAP treatments than in controls.
Modified atmosphere packaging led to a retardation of fruit softening and thus maintenance of quality during storage extension of storability compared to controls.
