Abstract
Pseudomonas syringae pv. tomato is the causal agent of bacterial speck of tomato.
This disease can cause serious economic losses especially on fruits of susceptible genotypes used for the canned peeled tomato industry and for the fresh market.
In 2004, in a field in the Sele Valley, Southern Italy, symptoms of bacterial speck were observed on fruits (necrotic spots of one-two mm on the skin) of twenty cherry tomato cultivars.
Isolations from the spots and identification of the fluorescent bacterial colony by PCR, demonstrated that the causal agent was, as expected, P. syringae pv. syringae (Pst).
This bacterium causes serious damage on cherry tomato fruits for the fresh market or for processing.
Incidence of bacterial speck was recorded on the fruits at harvesting.
Necrotic spots were observed on all the cherry tomato cultivars.
The highest incidence on fruits was observed in ‘PS 2380329’ (13.6%) and ‘Altavilla’ (8.6%); the lowest incidence was observed in ‘Brillantino’, ‘Coriandolo’ and ‘Mignon’ (0.1%); the other cultivars showed incidence from 0.6% to 7.9%. Resistance of ‘Brillantino’ is due to Pto gene whereas the origin of resistance showed by ‘Coriandolo’ and ‘Mignon’ need further investigation.
