Abstract
Progress in the field of plant abiotic stress tolerance over the last decade is analyzed with special emphasis on tomato.
Most attention is given to the rapidly developing field of biotechnology and its important role in facilitating our understanding of the critical physiological mechanisms involved in abiotic stress adaptation.
After discussing recent research advancement on general aspects of plant stress response, a few examples of transgenic stress tolerant tomato plants will be presented and their potential application in an agricultural context will be discussed.
From our analysis it emerged that a great improvement in this field can be expected from interfacing biotechnology, plant genetics, agronomy and crop physiology in the unifying interdisciplinary field of functional biology of plant production under stress.
