Abstract
Concerning bacterial pathogens affecting tomato plants, Pseudomonas syringae pv. tomato (PST), causal agent of tomato speck, is one of the most spread, in greenhouse and in open field tomato crops in the world.
Its control is mainly related to appropriate cultural practices and preventive cupric treatments.
Due to the EU copper use restriction and the importance of tomato crop also in organic agriculture, PST control strategies, characterised by a low environmental impact and able to substitute copper compounds result particularly requested.
Natural extracts with antibacterial activity obtained from Liliaceae and Moraceae plants were studied.
In in vitro tests PST was used at 106 and 108 cfu ml-1; antibacterial activity of Liliaceae extract was verified at 10 g L-1 while Moraceae extract was tested at 60 g L-1. In in vivo tests PST was utilised at 105 and 108 cfu ml-1 and natural extracts at the same in vitro tests concentrations, respectively.
In vitro tests both vegetal extracts showed antibacterial activity on PST at different concentrations.
In vivo tests Liliaceae and Moraceae extracts confirmed their antimicrobial activity on tomato speck bacterial pathogen. Liliacae and Moraceae extracts reduced 60% and 68%, and 32% and 22%, disease incidence (DI) and disease severity (DS), respectively.
