Abstract
The study has contributed to primary knowledge on Origanum vulgare L. phenolic compounds and radical scavenging activity from Lithuania.
The composition of ethanolic extracts from inflorescences, leaves and stems was analyzed by HPLC method.
Three phenolic acids and ten flavonoids were identified in O. vulgare. Rosmarinic acid was the dominant compound in the content of inflorescences extracts.
The analyzed accessions were characterized by dominance of rosmarinic acid, hyperoside, naringin + rutin and astragalin.
The antioxidant activity was measured in terms of radical scavenging ability, using a stable free radical 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) test.
The lower chromatographic profile (DPPH quenching chromatogram) confirmed that predominant free radical scavengers in oregano extracts were vitexin together with an unidentified compound, rosmarinic acid and hyperoside.
