TRICHOMES MORPHOLOGY AND ESSENTIAL OILS COMPOSITION IN MICROPROPAGATED VS. FIELD GROWN THYMUS CAESPITITIUS PLANTS

Micropropagation of one Thymus caespititius Brot. genotype to verify their ability to produce the typical volatile oil is described.
The morphology of the trichomes and the chemical composition of the essential oils from micropropagated plants have been studied.

Caespititius field plants and micropropagated plants were found nonglandular and glandular trichomes (peltate and capitate ) similar to other Lamiaceae-like trichomes.
Carvacrol (71%), was the main component detected in the essential oil isolated from the field grown plants while in the essential oil from in vitro plants, carvacrol (20-29%), carvacryl acetate (20-40%) and one unidentified component (6-16%) were present in high relative amounts.
The different composition between both plant materials may reflect the fact that in vitro cultures are recent (less than one year old) and also the particular conditions of in vitro culture.
