MOLECULAR AND VOLATILES CHARACTERIZATION OF PORTUGUESE THYMUS CAESPITITIUS CHEMOTYPES

Abstract
21 individual aerial parts samples of Thymus caespititius were collected on Terceira, São Jorge, Flores and Graciosa (Azores) and on the mainland north of Portugal.
The molecular approach was performed using 10 ISSR primers generating a total of 176 polymorphic bands.
On the basis of the ISSR patterns, the individuals were grouped into 4 clusters with low correlation (SDICE=0.18) due the high genetic polymorphism detected (98.9%). Isolated by distillation-extraction, the volatiles were analyzed by GC and GC-MS. The volatile cluster analysis allowed samples separation on thymol, carvacrol, α-terpineol and sabinene chemotypes.
No straight correlation between molecular and chemical assessments could be found.
Other tools, such as terpene synthases studies, are currently under way to try to improve the understanding on this species chemical polymorphism.
