Abstract
The study aims at analyzing modifications in vine cropping conditions due to climate change for some well known French vineyards and at considering the opportunities of introducing irrigation or changing other cropping options.
It is part of a more important modeling project on various cropping systems, CLIMATOR, from which were extracted simulations on four locations with two models: a growth and yield model (STICS) and a vine water balance model (BHV). The results show that a slight increase in water stress has to be feared for the next 50 years but the most harmful consequence for wine quality is probably the long term increase in thermal maturation conditions.
As far as the increase in water stress is concerned, technical adaptations such as irrigation, changing soil or planting densities could be considered while changing genotype leads to some contrarily effects regarding water and thermal stresses.
