Abstract
The Embrapa potato breeding program aims to enhance germplasm and develop new cultivars adapted to subtropical and tropical ecosystems.
Part of the germplasm enhancement effort is applied for improvement of traits that mitigate some of expected impacts of global warming, i.e., heat and drought tolerance.
The objective of this work was to study selection methods for drought tolerance.
The work was carried on at Embrapa Clima Temperado, Pelotas-RS, Brazil.
Three methods were tested: 1) reposition of evapotranspiration in small plastic bags; 2) polyethilenoglycol 6000 (PEG) in substrate; and 3) PEG in hydroponics.
Plant material from tissue culture and pre-basic tubers were used in tests, which conducted in plastic houses.
Also field experiments were carried out to validate the results.
The three methods showed differences among the potato genotypes for drought tolerance; the tuber yield and the total plant dry matter were the most sensitive variables to water stress; and the PEG method showed to be the simplest, but the most expensive one.
