Abstract
The introduction, in recent years, of insect-excluding screens, has aggravated the problem of insufficient ventilation, by adding resistance to the flow through the ventilation openings.
The trend towards large greenhouses further restricts ventilation, by reducing the efficacy of side vents, relying almost solely on heat and vapour exchange through the roof. In this study the limiting case of an infinite flat-roof screenhouse is analysed in terms of the mixing length methodology, assuming that the horizontal shear flow is one dimensional.
The screen is defined by two parameters, which can be evaluated for actual screens by full scale or wind-tunnel experiments.
To this end eddy correlation measurements below and above the screen are required, as well a wind profile above the screen.
The mixing-length results may also be compared with results obtained by computational fluid dynamics, often used for ventilation studies.
