EFFECT OF THE NUTRIENT SOLUTION ELECTRICAL CONDUCTIVITY (EC) ON THE GROWTH, DEVELOPMENT AND QUALITY OF ENDIVE (CICHORUM ENDIVIA L.) CULTIVATED UNDER COVERS

Abstract
In the reported experiment endive was cultivated according to the NFT hydroponic system NFT in a greenhouse with controlled microclimatic conditions.
The aim of the work was a comparison of endive response to stress conditions caused by the increased EC of the fertigation solution was investigated.
The 8 mS.cm-1 nutrient solution EC level was obtained by: 1) threefold increase of ions in the fertigation solution, as compared with the control fertigation (3x treatment) and 2) adding of 30 mmol NaCl to the control fertigation solution (added NaCl treatment). The use of increased EC fertigation in the experiment did not cause a significant drop in the endive fresh matter production.
The high EC of the nutrient solution in the NaCl treatment obtained caused a significant decrease of the chlorophyll content in the endive leaves and increase of the proline content.
No significant decrease of the accumulation of nitrates resulting from the increase of EC fertigation was observed ‘Galanti’ cultivar accumulated more proline as compared with ‘Barundi’.
