Abstract
Uptake and transport of mineral nutrients may be considered as a process made up of a number of closely coordinated steps.
The rate of working of the slowest step will regulate the whole process.
For practical and technical reasons, since research began in this field the individual steps have been studied separately.
It is important to understand the individual stages in a process but we must not lose sight of how the process works as a whole.
Therefore in order to understand nutrient movement in trees a synthetic approach will ultimately be required.
This paper provides a short general review of the subject illustrated by some recent work of the author and his collaborators.
The various stages of uptake and transport are considered and their importance in regulating the whole process discussed.
