Abstract
Titles on the programme for this conference indicate at least twenty individual environmental, nutritional, or cultural factors that influence fruit composition, and thus fruit quality.
Since none of these factors acts independently, a discussion of their interactions seems appropriate.
In an excellent review Wiersum (1979) presented these interactions as they relate to calcium nutrition and since the calcium content of fruits is the dominant factor determining quality, much of what is presented here will be repetition.
However, I will attempt not only to indicate the primary effects on fruit of altering the available level of each of the nutrient elements or of changing the environment or cultural practices, but also will attempt to indicate the possible ultimate effect on fruit composition of the interactions among these factors.
