Abstract
The discussion was concerned mainly with attempts to describe the effects of changing management practices on the utilization of nitrogen and phosphorus.
With the change from total grass (or overall cultivation) to systems of herbicide use, the large effects of grass on the timing and total availability of nitrogen were now particularly evident.
These were not only due to direct competition effects for nitrogen but also to indirect effects on the recycling of nitrogen from organic to inorganic forms (mineralization) and to the redistribution of soil moisture (Greenham).
