Abstract
The media supplemented with different concentrations of NaCl, polyethylene glycol and sorbitol affected the survival and morphology of onion seedlings.
Majority of seedlings died on the medium with 256.5 mM NaCl.
Addition to the culture mediums of above mentioned chemicals resulted in changes in the appearance of plants; chlorosis, necrosis, vitreous tissues, reduced plant height and root system was observed.
Addition of sorbitol and polyethylene glycol was less toxic to plants, compared to tested concentrations of NaCl.
Plants that survived in vitro treatments were further selected in the greenhouse.
The survival of plants in vivo depended on their previous treatment in vitro and the level of NaCl in the soil.
