Abstract
An experiment was conducted to clarify the juvenility of Japanese bunching onion (Allium fistulosum L.), a green plant vernalization plant, with the special references on the existence of seed vernalization.
The flowering response to chilling treatment just after germination was determined under lightened condition, and the promotion of bolting was found only in a very early-flowering Taiwanese variety Bei-cong (961 Fragrant) and not in a medium-flowering Japanese variety Kincho. Though this is the first report on seed vernalization-like response in bunching onion, it is considered that the ordinary bunching onion cultivars do not have seed vernalization response.
