HORTAX AND THE FUTURE OF CULTIVATED PLANT TAXONOMY

Abstract
Though efforts to establish an International Association for Cultivated Plant Taxonomy were unsuccessful and unproductive, there still exists a need for a co-ordinated approach to the advancement of the subject.
HORTAX (The Horticultural Taxonomy Group) is an independent Committee formed of European taxonomists and horticulturists that has been active since its formation in 1988. Here the interests and outputs of HORTAX are presented and the future objectives of the Committee outlined.
Ways in which these aims might be integrated with a wider progression of cultivated plant taxonomy are identified and a case made to position HORTAX as a primary means of information exchange and communication.
The practice of classifying plants in cultivation, or of cultivated origin, is assessed in terms of biology, culture, ecology and legislation and is found to be generally undervalued.
The importance of more effectively explaining the relevance of cultivated plant taxonomy to non-specialist audiences is urged.
