Abstract
Demonstration trials were performed on a farm in Central Poland in 2011-2012, where tomatoes were grown in an unheated plastic greenhouse.
The trials were aimed at the evaluation of integrating tomato grafting on ‘Maxifort’ rootstock and chemical fumigation with reduced doses of dazomet (30 and 40 g·m-2) on root health status, plant growth, fruit setting and yield.
In both years, chemical treatments significantly limited the nematodes’ population size.
The numbers of plant parasitic nematodes in soil samples following soil treatment with dazomet at 40 and 30 g·m-2 was reduced by 54.4 and 69.4% in 2011 and by 100 and 72.2% in 2012, respectively.
The presence of Meloidogyne hapla on tomato roots was only observed on plants grown in untreated soil, both on non-grafted and grafted plants.
Grafting itself significantly reduced the severity of root infection with a complex of soil-borne pathogens (Colletotrichum coccodes, Pyrenochaeta lycopersici, Rhizoctonia solani). However, the reduction of the root rot severity indices following the application of dazomet (62 and 50% at 40 and 30 g m-2, respectively) was similar on grafted and non-grafted plants.
Growing grafted tomato plants in fumigated soil did not increase the fruit yield compared to the untreated control.
This suggests that combining soil fumigation with tomato grafting could have a limited influence on the final yield when the pressure from soil-borne pests and pathogens is low.
