Abstract
Dimethyl disulfide (DMDS) is a naturally occurring organic chemical compound that is currently used in industrial processes and is listed as a flavoring food additive in EU. In December 2012 its registration process as a new fumigant in Europe started after decades without new fumigant pre-planting solutions.
DMDS has particular nematicidal efficacy and we have studied the effect of the emulsifiable concentrate (EC) against root-knot nematodes (Meloidogyne spp.) and on the crop yield for different fruiting vegetables (pepper Dulce Italiano and cucumber Anico in Spain). Two experimental trials were established at Sevilla and Alicante.
The soil and the PVC pipes were covered by Virtually Impermeable Film (VIF). DMDS was applied at 300 and 400 L/ha of the formulated product, using a Venturi system.
These treatments were compared with 1,3-dichloropropene (150 L/ha of formulated product) and an untreated control.
Twenty one days after disinfestations (14 days covered with VIF and 7 days left uncovered for soil aeration) the seedlings were planted and the effects of the treatment on root infection and crop performance evaluated.
The results showed a very good efficacy of DMDS against Meloidogyne spp. and remarkable yield increase of pepper and cucumber.
In total, 7 yield assessments and 2 root galling assessments were done.
In both trials, root galling showed significant differences among untreated and treated plots with no difference among the treated plots.
Therefore, DMDS was as effective as the standard fumigant in the control of the nematode.
The treated plots registered greater production of both peppers and cucumbers and no difference occurred among treatments.
