Abstract
Nowadays, plastic films are used increasingly for decreasing the dose of fumigants in soil disinfestations, decreasing emissions from fumigants into the air atmosphere and for decreasing the operator exposure.
Some films provide a better diffusion barrier to certain fumigants than others.
Gastight films, multilayer coextruded films, have a layer barrier material such as polyamide or ethylene vinyl alcohol copolymer (EVOH). Arkema is developing a new gastight film containing EVOH, coded DAF (DMDS Approved Film). This film was evaluated in Europe in comparison with existing polyamide films, in laboratory conditions and in field conditions.
The fumigant used in these experiments was DMDS (DiMethyl DiSulfide). The mass transfer coefficient h was calculated in laboratory conditions in order to compare the permeability of plastic film even if their nature or thickness are different.
This coefficient is given in cm/h and represents the rate of gas penetration through the film.
Therefore, the smaller this coefficient, the better the efficacy of the film.
DMDS concentrations into the air atmosphere during film removing were measured in order to evaluate operator exposure in commercial greenhouse.
The efficacy for weeds control of DMDS used in combination with DAF film has been measured under compliance with good experimental practices.
The results of these studies regarding the permeability as well as the efficacy show that this new film is an alternative to existing gastight polyamide films.
