Abstract
The apple is one of the most common and culturally important fruit crops in temperate areas worldwide.
It has been demonstrated that the crabapple Malus sylvestris (L.) Mill., was the wild European progenitor of the domesticated apple.
Its distribution spreads from south-Scandinavia to the Iberian Peninsula and from the Volga to the British Isles.
One of the places it can be found within the Iberian Peninsula is in the abandoned orchards of the Sierras of Cazorla, Segura and Las Villas.
Its fruits had an alimentary use in the past, and nowadays it is a natural genetic resource which is used as rootstock.
Wild apple represents potentially useful sources of diversity for apple breeding.
Unlike the domesticated species which have been widely studied for both their physical-chemical characteristics and their physiological or nutritive characteristics, there are no previous studies about the wild fruits of the M. sylvestris. This paper aims to carry out a preliminary study of the physical-chemical and physiological characteristics of these fruits.
Monitoring of postharvest ripening at 20°C and a study of refrigeration storage at 0.5°C with post-maintenance were carried out to determine their aptitude for cold storage.
The ripening period lasted 39 days and the conservation experiment lasted up to 4.5 months at 0.5°C + 21 d at 20°C. Ethylene emission, respiratory rate, weight loss, firmness, color and soluble solids content were analyzed.
