Abstract
Plants of Dieffenbachia maculata ‘Perfection’ free of dasheen mosaic virus (DMV) through shoot-tip culture were horticulturally superior to their non-indexed, commercial counterparts.
In greenhouse trials, an average of 18.8 cuttings per plant were obtained from 30 DMV-indexed plants compared to only 10.1 from 60 non-indexed plants; 98.4% of the 564 indexed cuttings were judged to be saleable compared to only 47.3% for the 606 non-indexed cuttings.
Under conditions simulating the home environment (80–150 foot-candles, 25°C), indexed plants compared favorably with non-indexed plants in appearance, and they did not grow at rates too rapid to render them suitable as house plants.
Three of the DMV-indexed lines were selected as candidates for release to the Florida foliage industry on the basis of their superior productivity, overall appearance, varietal stability, and the rapidity with which rooted cuttings became established in soil.
