Abstract
The floricultural industry in China has experienced four stages, which consist of embryonic stage, starting stage, steady developing stage and rapid developing stage since 1958. During the period 2001-2012, great increases along with remarkable variations have taken place in such aspects as growing area, sales quantity, sales value, export value, number of flower markets, number of flower growers and employees in the floricultural industry in China.
Compared to other provinces, Jiangsu achieved the largest growing area with 135155.5 ha in 2012 and the highest sales value at CNY 14.7 billion.
Yunnan accounted for the highest export value at USD 196 million in 2012. Nursery stocks comprised 56.9% of the total growing area in 2012, an increase from 55% in 2011. There are six major cut flowers including rose, lily, chrysanthemum, carnation, gladiolus and gerbera.
Rose accounts for both the largest planting area and the highest sales quantity; however, lily achieves the highest sales value.
The floricultural industry is projected to grow as rapidly as and in concert with the economic development in China.
The efficiency of floriculture will increase to achieve greater productivity and profitability from smaller areas by fewer people; while the production of flowers and nursery stock will concentrate on specialized areas with optimal climate, soil and transport.
