Abstract
Lilium Oriental hybrid ‘Sorbonne’ is one of the most popular bulb flowers in the Chinese market.
This study was carried out to test the influence of a widely applied plant growth regulator, choline chloride, on growth and ornamental quality of Lilium ‘Sorbonne’. Plants were treated with foliar spray of 50, 100 and 200 mg L-1 choline chloride solutions at six weeks after planting, or received no application (control). The flower crown diameter was significantly larger, and flower fresh weight was greater, in the plants treated with 100 mg L-1 of choline chloride compared to the control plants.
These differences may be the result of increased leaf numbers, and chlorophyll and sucrose content in the leaves, observed for the plants in this treatment, which may have provided more photo-assimilates for flower development.
However, further research is needed to counteract the excessive stem length that was induced by the choline chloride treatment.
