Abstract
This study was conducted to confirm the effect of artificial light on quantity, quality, and growth rate of tomatoes.
We used metal halide high-pressure sodium, fluorescent light-1 (normal), fluorescent light-2 (normal + red), LED, high-pressure sodium light-1 (250 W), and high-pressure sodium light-2 (400 W) light, as well as no treatment (control). We supplied additional light for 3 h after sunset and for 2 h before sunrise.
We compared accumulated fruit number and accumulated fruit weight.
Fruit quality indices assessed were acidity, brix, and ascorbic acid content.
Accumulated fruit weight decreased under LED and fluorescent light-2 light sources (by 30 and 5%, respectively), and increased under high-pressure sodium light-1, high-pressure sodium light-2, fluorescent light-1, and metal halide (by 64, 37, 45, and 48%, respectively) compared to the control.
Plant height under all artificial light sources, metal halide, fluorescent light-1, fluorescent light-2, high-pressure sodium light-1, high-pressure sodium light-2, and LED, increased compared to the control (by 12, 3, 5, 3, 8, and 10%, respectively).
