Abstract
The continuous process of a carnation flower opening as well as the works related to the opening itself, requires an objetive reference, identifyable as a sequency of discontinuous steps.

In the present study, carried out with flowers of the cv.
Scania, the opening procedure has been discomposed in seven stages, according to a literal and graphic description, by the statistical characteristics of the measures taken of several physical parameters of the flower, and through the relation between those parameter values during the whole opening progress.

That relation can be adjusted by a discriminant function, that is to say, by the coeficients of the function.
This statistical technic shows a highly significant level, and allows the classification of each flower into the stage at what it belongs.
