Diversity of plastids in citrus fruit

Abstract
Plastids are ubiquitous in flowering plants.
In citrus fruit, amyloplasts, chloroplasts, elaioplasts and chromoplasts are formed in the peel and flesh during fruit ripening.
More importantly, globular and crystalloid chromoplasts were observed to be formed region-specifically in citrus fruit.
At least three different patterns of chromoplast differentiation were found to be involved in fruit ripening.
Chromoplasts develop from or into chloroplasts in the peel and from amyloplasts in the flesh.
Recently, the development of specific protocols for isolating different plastid subtypes associated with the use of comparative proteomic technologies represents a powerful tool toward the uncovering of target proteins that play a role in plastid biogenesis and key metabolic pathways.
Based on proteomic studies, we identified many potentially new plastid-localized proteins, which provide new insights into the potential developmental and molecular mechanisms that underlie plastid biogenesis and differentiation in citrus fruit.
