Differential accumulation of rishitin and stigmasterol in five tomato cultivars in response to UV-C treatment

Abstract
The beneficial impact of postharvest UV-C treatment has been demonstrated for several horticultural products.
Although it is well established that the response of fruits and vegetables to postharvest treatments is dependent on the cultivar and several other factors, the influence of the genotype has been poorly studied in plant tissue responding to UV-C. In the present study five commercial tomato cultivars (Balzamot, Clermont, Lorenzo, Makari and Trust) were treated with three UV-C levels (0, 1.8 and 3.6 kJ m‑2) and stored for 22 days at 15°C and 95% relative humidity.
The levels of rishitin and of stigmasterol were evaluated in the control and UV-C-treated fruits after 3, 7, 15 and 22 days of storage.
As expected, marked differences were observed in the response of the different cultivars to the treatments.
The phytoalexin, rishitin, absent in all fruits of the control group, was induced by both UV-C treatments, but only in the cultivars Trust and Makari. The highest level of rishitin was found in the fruit of the cultivar Trust treated at 3.6 kJ m‑2 and after 15 days of storage.
Cultivar, UV-C treatment and storage duration significantly affected the stigmasterol content.
Riper fruits had the tendency to produce higher levels of stigmasterol.
The higher stigmasterol content find in some cultivars after 7 days of storage could be associated with tissue adjustment to the imposed stress.
