Effect of preharvest application of methyl salicylate, oxalic acid and methyl jasmonate on yield and quality of ‘Sweet Heart’ cherries

Abstract

In this work, the effect of preharvest treatments with natural products on sweet cherry (Prunus avium L. ‘Sweet Heart’) was studied.
Ten trees were foliar sprayed with methyl salicylate (MeSa) 1 mM, oxalic acid (OA) 2 mM and methyl jasmonate (MeJA) 0.5 mM, applied at three stages of fruit developmental cycle.
These treatments showed an increase in fruit weight at harvest, regardless of production in kg tree^‑1, the largest being the trees treated with MeSa followed by those treated with OA. At harvest, MeSa treatment led to higher firmness values and an increase of °Brix in MeSa and OA-treated fruits compared to control fruits.
No significant differences in parameters such as total acidity were observed.
The colour parameters a*/b* were similar for MeSa and OA treatment as well as the control, while those treated with MeJa had a minor colour index.
Therefore, preharvest treatments with natural compounds can efficiently and naturally increase the size of ‘Sweet Heart’ sweet cherry, improving the fruit quality at harvest.
