Effect of wounding and reduction of foliar area of scions on cutting-grafting of Leucospermum Rigoletto onto L. patersonii

Abstract
Areas potentially suitable for protea cultivation in Tenerife have clayey or alkaline-clayey soils.
The use of rootstocks tolerant to these types of soils, such as Leucospermum patersonii, could facilitate their development in them.
To study the propagation by cutting-grafting of the Leucospermum cultivar Rigoletto, an experiment was carried out in which Rigoletto scions were wedge grafted onto terminal cuttings of L. patersonii. The latter were rooted with bottom heat (22±2°C) under a fog system in a glasshouse, with 50% reduction of natural light.
The experimental design was a completely randomized block with 2×2 treatments (10 cuttings per treatment) and 4 replications.
The treatments consisted of the leaves on the scion being reduced or not, with or without wounding the cuttings.
At the end of the trial, the combination of scions with unreduced leaves + unwounded cuttings gave 77.5% of grafted plants, followed by the scions with unreduced leaves + wounded cuttings (72.5%). There were no significant differences among treatments except with the combination of scions with reduced leaves + unwounded cuttings.
Scion leaf reduction had a significant negative effect on the number of successfully grafted plants.
At that stage, leaf reduction, wounding and leaf reduction × wounding significantly influenced the rooting index.
