Abstract
It is intended is to give an overview of the main pests and diseases that attack the cultivation of proteas on the island of La Palma, both from a qualitative and quantitative point of view.
The percentage of incidence of each pest and disease has been calculated for the cultivars of proteas cultivated in a total of 42 farms, taking advantage of a total of 2420 records taken from 516 technical visits made during the years 2015 to 2019. In addition, an attempt has been made to relate the incidence of pests and diseases for each of the three climatic zones on the island, north, east and west.
The pests with the highest incidence on the island were mealybug (Planococcus citri and Pseudococcus longispinus), aphids (A. gossypii and A. fabae) and armored scales (Aspidiotus nerii). In the case of the diseases Botryosphaeria attacks first, followed by Botrytis, Drechslera and Armillaria. Other diseases with certain incidence are Leptosphaeria, Rosellinia, Batcheloromyces or Elsinoe. With some specific exceptions, the attack of pests and diseases on the island of La Palma is not high, although we do not have other similar studies to compare results.
In the case of the diseases, it has not been possible to establish a clear relationship between climatic conditions and incidence, the sensitivity of each cultivar being a more important factor than the climatic conditions themselves.
Greater incidence of pest in general in the eastern zone, being able to be attributed to a more benign climate in comparison with the north and west zones where the minimum temperatures are sensibly lower and for greater periods of time.
