Abstract
Kiwifruit is a crop that grows in temperate climates and its production is mainly carried out in New Zealand, China, and Italy.
However, in the mountain area of Veracruz, Mexico, in an experimental orchard, kiwifruit has been adapted to subtropical high-altitude conditions.
The orchard has a limited number of specimens; in this context, the in vitro culture is a promising alternative for its propagation and introduction in this area.
This study seeks to standardize the establishment and in vitro multiplication of kiwifruit plants Actinidia chinensis var. deliciosa for subsequent transplanting to the field.
Disinfectant treatments and tissue regeneration for petiole, pedicel, and bud were evaluated, as well as disinfectant treatments and establishment medium formulations for seeds.
In addition, four formulations of MS growing medium were evaluated for plant multiplication, followed by an evaluation of survival during acclimatization.
All trials corresponded to a completely randomized design with at least 23 replicates.
Data were analyzed by normality tests and parametric and non-parametric analyses using the InfoStat statistical software.
The results indicated that the best treatment for the generation of new plants was from seeds disinfected with 70% ethyl alcohol for 10 min together with 30% Clorox® commercial bleach for 20 min and VW establishment medium.
MS medium supplemented with 2 N ammonium nitrate favored shoot multiplication, while 50% acclimatization was possible for plants originated from seeds of adapted plants.
In vitro seed establishment preserves variability, reduces development time, and homogenizes germination.
On the other hand, nitrogen in the culture medium stimulated shoot multiplication, vegetative growth, and vigor of kiwifruit plants.
