Abstract
Olive fruit and oil are highly prized in Oman and have many uses in traditional food and medicine.
The use and consumption of olives have been increasing in the country and the health benefits are attracting more extensive plantations and production in areas that were not known for olive cultivation in Oman.
The mountain of Al Jabal Al Akhdar has a semi-temperate climate characterized by mild winters and hot summers.
Since its introduction to commercial farms in the early 2000s, there has been a surge in olive production with the number of trees in 2019 reaching 15,000. In 2022, the number of trees jumped to 20,000 and the production of olive oil reached 10,000 L. Plans to expand the cultivation of olives throughout the country and evaluate suitable olive cultivars from various parts of the world, mainly from the Mediterranean regions of Turkey, Tunisia, Syria, and Egypt, are underway in the country.
This paper will highlight the recent history of olive production in Oman and its uses and the future potential of olive cultivation in the country.
