Abstract
Blueberry, raspberry, and strawberry are major berry crops in Canada.
Highbush blueberry and raspberry are mainly cultivated in the coastal region of British Columbia (BC), whereas strawberry are cultivated in several provinces including BC, Ontario (ON), Quebec (QC) and eastern Canada.
Botrytis fruit rot (BFR) caused by Botrytis cinerea is the most common disease of raspberry, blueberry, and strawberry occurring at harvest and postharvest.
BFR is more damaging in red raspberry than in the highbush blueberry in the coastal region of BC. Anthracnose fruit rot (AFR) caused by Colletotrichum spp. is also a major disease of strawberry and more problematic in eastern Canada than in BC. Mummy berry caused by Monilinia vacciniicorymbosi is another fruit disease of blueberry, and the disease is more problematic in lowbush blueberry and organic highbush blueberry than in conventional highbush blueberry.
Fruit and foliar disease caused by Neopestalotiopsis spp. is also an emerging disease in strawberry.
We will discuss the major impact of these fruit rot diseases on three berry crops in Canada and efforts to mitigate these fruit diseases.
