Abstract
Cactus pear seeds as by-products of cactus fruits, which were previously considered waste, now contain the “most expensive oil in the world”, with the market values potentially exceeding 500 € L‑1. There is now a lot of research interest in cactus pear seed oil.
Cactus seed oil has only just made its way into the cosmetic industry.
Cosmetic cream formulation properties (e.g., rheology) with cactus pear seed oil as one of the key ingredients have not been published, despite its nutritional and dermatological benefits (skin elasticity, cell metabolism and restoration of the skin structure, anti-ageing properties and wrinkles prevention). Oil-in water emulsion creams were formulated, with each cream containing cold-pressed cactus pear seed oil (Opuntia ficus-indica), cactus pear seed oil (Opuntia robusta), argan oil, marula oil, and extra virgin olive oil.
Rheological tests were performed using a rheometer.
All cream formulations showed a non-Newtonian pseudoplastic flow behaviour which is typical in cosmetic emulsion products, and that was dominated by elastic properties, which is recommended in cosmetics, for cream formulations to have long stability during storage or transportation.
Given that oils such as marula, argan, and extra virgin olive oils are already prevalent in many cosmetic products on the market, the similarities in cosmetic data of cactus pear seed oils and their respective cosmetic cream formulations with the other investigated cold-pressed vegetable oils and their respective cream formulations in this study, suggest the viability of cactus pear seed oil for market entry and product development in cosmetic applications.
