Abstract
Manipur, a remote state situated in the far-flung northeastern hilly region of India, nestled within the Indo-Burma biodiversity hotspot, is endowed with diverse agro-climatic zones and is home to about 155 wetlands.
Among these, Loktak Lake, a Ramsar site, stands out as the largest freshwater lake in the region.
Wetlands in Manipur, play a vital role in sustaining livelihood and agriculture of its people and support cultivation of a variety of traditional horticultural crops viz., the following species and Manipur common names: Trapa natans (heikak), Nelumbo nucifera (thambal), Euryale ferox (thangjing), Alocacia cuculata (singjupan), Amaranthus spinosis (chengkruk tingkhang panbi), Cyperus haspan (kauthum), Enhydra fluctuans (komprek tujombi), Eryngium foetidum (awa-phadigom), Hedychium coronarium (loklei), Hedyotis Auricularia (langban koukha), Houttuynia cordata (toningkhok), Ipomea aquatica (kolamni), Jussiaea repens (ising kundo), Neptunia oleraceae (eshing ikaithabi), Nymphaea stellata (thariktha), Nymphoides indicum (tharo-macha), Oenanthe javanica (komprek), Plantago erosa (yempat), Polygonum barbatum (yelang), Polygonum perfoliatum (lilhar), Polygonum posumba (phakpai), Sagittaria sagittifolia (koukha), Zizania latifolia (eshing kambong), Centella asiatica (peruk), Alpinia nigra (pullei), Amomum aromaticum (namra), Chenopodium album (monsaobi), Curcuma angustifolia (yaiple), Lysimachia obovata (kengoi), Stellaria media (yerum keirum), and a variety of other lesser-known indigenous crops.
These crops are utilized in traditional cuisine and hold ethno-botanic importance.
Being rich in bioactive compounds, these could be bio-prospected for potential nutraceutical molecules.
