Abstract
Pawpaw (Asimina triloba) is a tree fruit native to the eastern United States and is being grown on a small-scale commercially as a niche crop in North America, and many temperate countries in Europe and Asia.
A pawpaw leaf and fruit fungal spot (PLFS) has been observed in pawpaw consisting of a complex of Mycocentrospora asiminae, Pseudocercospora asiminae, and Phyllosticta asiminae. Symptoms include tan spots with dark brown borders on leaves, and dark brown to black superficial spots on the fruit epidermis, followed by cracking of fruit.
Due to fruit cracking, this disease can cause significant losses for growers.
A series of studies were conducted to determine if sulfur- and copper-based fungicides or biofungicides were effective control measures for PLFS in pawpaw.
Both sulfur and copper fungicides had some efficacy in controlling PLFS lesions on pawpaw leaves but were not effective on the fruit.
The following year, a fungicide containing copper and mancozeb and a biofungicide containing Bacillus amyloliquefaciens strain D747 were examined along with sulfur-based fungicides.
This study determined that the copper and mancozeb fungicide provided the best control of PLFS on pawpaw fruit and leaves; with high rates of sulfur also providing some control on leaves.
