Abstract
This study investigated the effects of supplemental far-red (FR) and ultraviolet-A (UVA) spectra on the growth performance, pigment accumulation, and photosynthetic activity of basil (Ocimum basilicum L.) cultivated in controlled environment agriculture (CEA) systems.
The experiment was conducted at 100 µmol m-2 s-1 light intensities using combinations of white, blue, red, FR, and UVA (1:1:3:0.5:0.5) LED spectra.
Growth parameters, including plant height, leaf number, biomass, and root length, were recorded, along with measurements of pigment concentrations (chlorophyll, flavonoids, anthocyanins), nitrogen-flavonoid index, and photosynthetic activity (Fv/Fm), performance index, stomatal conductance.
Results revealed that the inclusion of FR light (W+B+R+FR) generally promoted significant growth in all treatments, particularly in terms of plant height (38 cm), fresh weight (21.4 g), and dry weight (1.9 g). In addition, total flavonoid content (0.22), chlorophyll fluorescence (Fv/Fm of 0.73), performance index (1.15), and stomatal conductance were also significantly increased under this treatment.
Conversely, UVA supplementation (W+B+R+UVA) enhanced leaf length (25 cm), total chlorophyll (0.42). The combined FR and UVA treatment (W+B+R+FR+UVA) showed moderate results, suggesting a potential trade-off between vegetative growth and phytochemical enhancement.
These findings underscore the critical role of adding FR and UVA light in optimizing both yield and nutraceutical value of basil in CEA systems, providing insight into how spectral regulation can target specific production goals.
