RETENTION OF APPLE QUALITY IN CA STORAGE USING SEQUENTIAL ATMOSPHERE REGIMENTS

Abstract
Storage of several apple cultivars in low oxygen (0–1.5% CO2 + 1.0% O2) have been shown to induce a physiological block which retards fruit softening during subsequent storage at cold (0°C) or shelf temperatures (20°C). In addition McIntorh, Spartan and Golden Delicious apples have been found to be resistant to the development of low oxygen injury during the first 2 to 3 months exposure to 1.0% O2. The present study investigates the potential for reducing the risk of low O2 injury and maintaining McIntosh, Spartan and Golden Delicious apple quality in a bi-regimen CA storage using initial exposure to 1.0% O2 followed by conventional CA storage.
