Abstract
A mathematical model was constructed of a Marcellin type modified atmosphere storage system for apples.
The model can be used to investigate the performance of the storage system under a wide variety of conditions.
Design parameters and fruit respiratory characteristics can be altered in the model and the atmospheric composition and gas flow rate histories predicted.
System behavior is extremely sensitive to the form of the respiratory function; system performance can probably be improved by adding an active control component.
The model can be used to optimize the design of the control system.
