Abstract
Shoot apices of maleic hydrazide (MH)-treated and untreated onions that had been stored for six months were examined under light and transmission electron microscopes.
Cell division was evident in untreated apices only.
Cells in the apical region of MH-treated onions were much larger than those found in untreated samples.
Electron microscopy revealed that the cell walls in the MH-treated apices were unusually thick and that the apparent ’empty space’ in the cells was actually a large vacuole.
Cytoplasmic inclusions and the highly-convoluted nucleus were located at the periphery of the cell.
Cells in the apical region were structurally intact.
