Abstract
Seed treatments and soil amendments were used to increase stand establishment and uniformity of direct-seeded cabbage (Brassica olereca) under several environmental conditions.
Control (not treated), primed and pregerminated seeds mixed with gels were planted in September and October.
Seeds were covered with soil, plug-mix or GrowSorb.
Seed treatments did not effectively improve stand establishment, final stands or uniformity of cabbage.
Generally, primed seeds did not result in increased or more uniform seedling emergence.
Pregerminated seeds sown with Laponite gel or Liquagel did not improve establishment under conditions of heat stress and stands for all plantings were generally reduced when compared with a control.
The soil amendments, plug-mix and GrowSorb, usually resulted in more uniform stands with higher emergence.
Uniformity was improved most by soil amendments under conditions of heat stress.
