Abstract
An orchard optimal sampling scheme was developed to give the best estimates of the ethylene climacteric initiation dates (ECID) using a succession of analyses of internal ethylene concentration (IEC) in freshly picked apples.
IEC was then compared with four other methods of estimating ECID: mean delay between harvest and the initiation of the ethylene climacteric (EC) of bulk samples held in flowing atmospheres, of bulk samples held in static atmospheres, and of apples held individually in flowing atmospheres; IEC of attached apples with syringe needles previously inserted into the core cavity.
IEC of freshly picked apples appeared to be the most accurate method for estimating ECID.
