Abstract
Data are presented that characterize the structural formula of both amylovorin from infected green apple fruit and EPS (made in axenic culture) by Erwinia amylovora isolate E9. Biological activity expressed as wilt induction of Jonathan shoots appears unrelated to molecular size, viscosity and adornment of polymer side chain by either pyruvate of acetate, Wilt is probably the result of vascular occlusion caused by gels forming as a consequence of bacterial polysaccharide and vessel wall polymer interaction.
