Abstract
Flowers of Hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna) were artificially inoculated with the fire blight pathogen (Erwinia amylovora) in the laboratory, and disease progression monitored under maintained conditions of high humidity at 20°C. Scanning electron microscopy revealed a rapid multiplication of bacteria at the nectary surface, mainly in and around the nectarthodes.
Light microscopy showed that although the bacteria entered the subnectarthodal chamber by 6 h, penetration of the nectary tissue did not occur until 48 h.
Control inoculation with Erwinia carotovora led to limited multiplication but no penetration of the nectary tissue.
